Online Casino Poker UK — Video Poker & Casino Variants

Last updated: 9 May 2026 · 8 min read · By the BonusCasinosSites.net editorial team · Please gamble responsibly

"Online poker" covers two very different things. Proper online poker — cash games and tournaments played against other humans — sits in its own regulated category and is not what this page is about. Casino poker means the poker-derived games you play against the house: video poker, Casino Hold'em, Three Card Poker, Caribbean Stud and the wider family of fixed-odds poker variants. This page covers that casino-poker category, the mathematics of the main variants, and the operators with the strongest selection. For video poker specifically, see our video poker pay tables guide — pay table selection is the most important variable in video poker expected value.

Casino Poker Versus Live Poker

The distinction matters. In a cash-game poker room you are playing against other players, the casino takes a rake (typically 5 per cent of the pot capped at a few pounds), and skill genuinely determines long-run results. In casino poker, you are playing against the house according to fixed rules, the house edge is built into the pay tables, and skill matters only in the limited sense of not making mathematically worse decisions than optimal.

This page covers the casino-poker family. For proper online poker, the major UK-licensed rooms sit outside the casino category and include PokerStars, GGPoker and several smaller operators; these are not in our casino comparison table.

The Main Casino Poker Variants

Video poker. Solo poker against a paytable. You are dealt five cards, choose which to hold, and are dealt replacements for the rest. Your final hand pays according to a fixed schedule — a pair of jacks or better typically being the minimum paying hand. Jacks or Better with a 9/6 pay table carries a 0.46 per cent house edge with optimal strategy — genuinely one of the lowest in the casino. Deuces Wild and Joker Poker are common variants with different pay tables and different optimal strategies.

Casino Hold'em. A simplified Texas Hold'em where you play one hand against the dealer. You ante, see three community cards, and decide whether to call (2x ante) or fold. If you call, two more community cards are revealed and both hands are evaluated. House edge around 2.16 per cent with optimal play. Covered in depth on our dedicated page.

Three Card Poker. Player and dealer each receive three cards. You ante, see your cards, decide whether to play (match the ante) or fold. Dealer needs queen-high or better to qualify. House edge 3.37 per cent on the Ante Play bet with optimal strategy. Covered in detail on our dedicated page.

Caribbean Stud Poker. Five-card stud against the dealer. You ante, see your five cards and the dealer's one upcard, decide whether to raise (2x ante) or fold. Dealer needs ace-king or better to qualify. House edge 5.22 per cent — high, but mitigated by the optional progressive jackpot side bet. Covered in depth on its own page.

Pai Gow Poker. Seven cards split into a five-card and two-card hand, both of which must beat the dealer's equivalent hands to win. House edge 2.84 per cent assuming a 5 per cent commission on winning bets. Full detail on its dedicated page.

Ultimate Texas Hold'em. Hold'em against the dealer with progressively-worsening raise options. House edge around 2.2 per cent with optimal strategy — comparable to Casino Hold'em but with more decision points.

Video Poker in Depth

Video poker is the closest casino game to "beatable" in the traditional sense. A full-pay Jacks or Better machine (paying 9 units on a full house and 6 on a flush per unit bet) carries a 99.54 per cent RTP with optimal play — meaning a 0.46 per cent house edge. Better pay tables exist on some Deuces Wild variants (Full Pay Deuces Wild has a theoretical RTP of 100.76 per cent with optimal strategy), though these are almost never deployed online in the UK market.

Optimal play matters enormously on video poker. Sub-optimal decisions on which cards to hold can raise the house edge by 1-2 percentage points — essentially wiping out the game's value proposition. Free strategy charts are available online and memorising the basic strategy for Jacks or Better takes a few hours of practice. Players who play video poker without learning basic strategy are playing a different, much worse game than those who do.

Common Video Poker Variants Available at UK Casinos

Jacks or Better. The reference variant. Pay tables in the UK online market are usually 8/5 (8x on full house, 5x on flush) rather than the full-pay 9/6, meaning the optimal-strategy RTP is around 97.3 per cent rather than 99.54 per cent. Still respectable.

Deuces Wild. All twos act as wilds. Different optimal strategy from Jacks or Better. UK pay tables typically yield 98-99 per cent RTP.

Joker Poker. A joker is added to the deck as a wild. Lower hand requirements to pay (typically kings or better rather than jacks).

Bonus Poker, Double Bonus, Double Double Bonus. Variants of Jacks or Better with enhanced payouts for four-of-a-kind hands and reduced payouts elsewhere. Different optimal strategies.

Multi-hand variants. Play 10, 25, 50 or 100 hands simultaneously from a single initial deal. The same hold decision applies across all hands. Increases variance without affecting RTP.

Poker Bonuses at UK Casinos

Almost all casino poker variants contribute 10 per cent or 0 per cent to wagering requirements, meaning they are unsuitable for bonus clearance. Some specific operators exclude poker from bonus eligibility entirely. Check the bonus T&Cs if you plan to play poker immediately after a deposit that triggered a bonus — you may be unintentionally voiding the bonus.

Live Dealer Casino Poker

Evolution runs live dealer versions of Casino Hold'em, Three Card Poker, Caribbean Stud and Ultimate Texas Hold'em. The rules are identical to the RNG versions; the experience adds a human dealer and the slower theatrical pace of a physical card game. Our live casino poker page covers these specifically.

Our Top UK Casino Poker Operators

Ladbrokes and Coral carry the full Playtech casino poker range including a strong video poker selection. Casumo and Casushi carry Evolution's live dealer poker tables and the Microgaming video poker range. 10Bet has a particularly strong video poker selection. For actual online poker cash games and tournaments, the top UK operators sit outside our casino comparison — PokerStars and PartyPoker remain the dominant UK-licensed rooms.

A Responsible Note

Video poker in particular has a "near-beatable" reputation that can prompt extended play sessions in search of margin that is not actually there at the typical UK pay tables. Even full-pay 9/6 Jacks or Better has a house edge — smaller than a slot, but still an edge. Set deposit and session limits as you would for any game. Our responsible gambling guide covers the framework.

Casino Poker Versus Real Poker — The Distinction UK Players Should Understand

The "online poker" category in UK casinos refers to house-banked poker variants — Caribbean Stud, Casino Hold'em, Three Card Poker, Pai Gow Poker, Let It Ride — where the player competes against a dealer following fixed rules, not against other players. These games are mathematically more similar to blackjack than to real poker. Understanding this distinction matters because strategy, bankroll requirements and expected returns all differ.

Real poker — tournaments and cash games run by the operator's poker room — is a peer-to-peer game. The operator takes a small percentage of each pot or a tournament entry fee but does not compete in the hands. Winning players at real poker extract money from losing players minus the operator's rake. It is, uniquely among casino offerings, a game at which skilled players can achieve positive expected value against weaker opponents.

Casino poker variants look like real poker but are structurally different. The house edge in these games ranges from roughly 2 per cent (Three Card Poker with optimal play) to over 5 per cent (some Caribbean Stud variants). The player has no opponents other than the house, strategy decisions are limited (typically a single raise-or-fold choice per hand), and the long-term expectation is loss. These are variance games with a poker skin — the skill of reading opponents or bluffing has no application.

For UK players deciding between the categories, the choice is usually a matter of session style. Real poker requires longer sessions, more strategy investment and stronger bankroll management but offers the only positive-expectation path in a casino. Casino poker variants are faster, more similar to blackjack in session rhythm, and suitable for shorter casual play. Neither is objectively better; they serve different purposes.

Within the casino poker category, the variants worth prioritising are Three Card Poker (lowest house edge with correct ante/play strategy at around 3.4 per cent), Casino Hold'em (house edge around 2.2 per cent with optimal strategy), and Let It Ride (around 3.5 per cent). The variants to approach more cautiously are progressive-jackpot side bets on any of these games — the house edge on side bets routinely exceeds 15 per cent, and the jackpot contribution makes the base game worse rather than better.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between online poker and casino poker?

Online poker is multiplayer cash games and tournaments against other human players, with the operator taking a small rake per pot. Skill determines long-run results. Casino poker (Casino Hold'em, Three Card Poker, Caribbean Stud) is poker-derived games played against the house with fixed rules and built-in house edges. Completely different product categories.

Is video poker a form of real poker?

No. Video poker is a solo slot-style game where you are dealt five cards, choose which to hold, and are dealt replacements for the rest, with payouts based on the final hand according to a fixed paytable. There are no other players. The "poker" reference is to the hand rankings and the decision element; it is mechanically a slot.

Do casino poker games clear welcome bonuses?

Usually no or minimally. Casino poker variants typically contribute 10% or 0% to wagering requirements — same as blackjack and roulette. Some operators exclude casino poker entirely from bonus eligibility. For bonus clearance, slots at 100% contribution are the practical vehicle.

What is the house edge on casino poker games?

Varies by variant: Casino Hold'em around 2.16%, Ultimate Texas Hold'em around 2.2%, Three Card Poker 3.37%, Caribbean Stud 5.22%, video poker 0.46% to 3% depending on the specific title and paytable. Video poker offers the best edge among casino poker variants; Caribbean Stud the worst (without the progressive jackpot).

Where can I play actual online poker in the UK?

The major UK-licensed poker rooms sit outside the casino category and include PokerStars, GGPoker UK, PartyPoker and 888Poker. These operators hold specific UKGC remote poker licences separate from casino licences. The top casino operators we list are for casino poker (house-banked variants), not real multiplayer poker.
